Tonight, at Anfield, Liverpool welcome the Italian side in a Champions League fixture they need to win by two clear goals to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
Jurgen Kopp will be hoping that sat in the Liverpool dug-out, his team can produce another of those wonderful European nights, at Anfield, where, faced with adversity, Liverpool triumph and march on.
However, it appears things could have been so different.
On the eve of the fixture, the local media source, the Liverpool Echo, reveals that, tonight, Jurgen could have been sat in the Napoli dug-out with our German boss admitting, whilst he was at Dortmund, he had talks with the Napoli owner, Aurelio De Laurentiis, about taking on the Napoli position, with Jurgen quoted as having remarked:
“What I really like with Mr De Laurentiis is that he doesn’t hide with information. The only problem is Aurelio is quite chatty! I don’t think I have ever told anyone about that conversation, but he mentions it from time to time.”
Another point that raises its head in the same article, relates to Klopp, one day, possibly managing in Italy with the boss further adding about the possibility:
“I still have a contract, three and a half years, not sure if anybody wants me after that. I like Italy, Italian food, everything is fine but unfortunately, I don’t speak your language too well.”
As is obvious, Klopp didn’t take the position, instead our former boss, Rafael Benitez did.
But, things could have been so different if Jurgen had of decided life in Serie A was for him!
