Despite picking up a devastating injury back in October against Everton in the Merseyside derby which left him requiring surgery, Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk could be set for a return ahead of schedule, with The Sunday World reporting that there is hope that the 29-year-old could feature for the club again this season.

Liverpool have been without the defender for the majority of the season, with them struggling with injuries overall – but the news that we could see Van Dijk feature before the end of the current campaign brings a welcome bit of good news for the fan base and for Jurgen Klopp and the club themselves, as I am sure that the German will be hoping to have his first-choice defensive pairing of Virgil and Joe Gomez back in the squad.

There had been plenty of transfer links flying around due to the lack of options in defence, despite calls from the club and Klopp himself that it is unlikely a signing will be made this month – leaving the club having to play Fabinho and either youngster’s Nat Phillips or Rhys Williams in defence together.

I do think the Reds need to strengthen in defence during the transfer window as I don’t think it would be wise to rely on the youngsters during a season where we are trying to retain our Premier League title, especially given the competitiveness

It had also recently been revealed that Liverpool were working on a new deal for Van Dijk this summer with a new and improved contract as a reward for his achievements and his time at the club, helping us to Champions League and Premier League glory over the past two seasons.
