After suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament against Everton during the Reds’ 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby back in October – there was positive news yesterday morning that Virgil van Dijk had returned to ‘light recovery training’.

The Dutchman joined the club back in 2018 for a then world-record fee of £76 million from fellow Premier League Southampton and has since gone on to become one of the best defenders in the world.

The 29-year-old had been dealt a devastating blow that he wouldn’t return to action until at least April next year, with the defender to miss 33 of the club’s games this season.

The current injury crisis at the club leaves the Reds without at least seven of their first-team stars ahead of Sunday’s game against Leicester – but van Dijk’s return to low impact training brings a slightly positive note to a somewhat negative time for the squad.

The defender’s absence was a big blow for the Reds, along with the later injury to his central-defensive partner Joe Gomez, leaving just Joel Matip as the club’s only senior centre-back along with youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams.

His current rehabilitation has taken its next step and in a positive direction at that – with the hard work starting now for the Dutchman who will no doubt be itching to get back on the pitch as soon as possible and with the current news, there is hope that he could make a return before the end of the season – or maybe even sooner than initially thought.
