Virgil Van Dijk stars as Netherlands top the group

|

Virgil Van Dijk captained the Netherlands in their 2-0 victory against the hosts Qatar to ensure the Europeans topped Group A.

The victory awarded them their second clean sheet in three games at the World Cup, only conceding one goal in the whole of the group stage which was against Ecuador in their 1-1 draw in matchday two.

Liverpool-linked forward Cody Gakpo impressed once again as he scored for the third game in a row, leaving him as joint-top goalscorer alongside France’s Kylian Mbappe and Ecuador’s Enner Valencia.

Netherlands have certainly been one of the more impressive sides at the World Cup so far but have been considered to be in one of the “easiest” groups, if such thing even exists.

Van Dijk will believe his side is capable of going far in the competition, and will no doubt be looking to lead Holland to their first ever World Cup triumph.

As they finished top of Group A, the Netherlands will face whichever nation finishes second in Group B which includes England, USA, Wales and Iran.

All four of them sides have a possibility of finishing second in the group, as England face Wales and Iran face USA tonight in the final matchday in Group B.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will start for the Three Lions and will face up against a number of former Reds with Danny Ward, Neco Williams, Joe Allen and Harry Wilson all being involved in the Wales squad for the World Cup.
