This season has been littered with talking points for Liverpool fans, with our form way off of what was expected, as well as players picking up injuries left, right, and centre.

One of the bigger topics, however, has been that of the future of Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who has become a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side and grown to become a fantastic player in the club’s history helping us to win the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup in just four years.

Wijnaldum’s contract will come to an end in the summer and the club has been trying to negotiate an extension on his current deal but to no avail. It appears as though the two parties cannot come to an agreement and this has led to plenty of speculation and rumours regarding the 30-year-old’s future, with Barcelona keen to land his signature.

During the club’s press conference on Tuesday prior to last night’s game against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, Wijnaldum was poised with the question as to whether he will be leaving the club in the summer, as cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter below, and this was his response…

I personally think these are some really positive things to hear coming from Wijnaldum’s mouth given how tight-lipped he has been for some time now over his future.

The fact he still wants to play with this side and would be devastated if this was his last season doing so clearly shows his desire to stay at the club – it appears to me that the club isn’t doing enough to reward everything he has done during his time at Anfield and doesn’t seem to be willing to meet the demands that he deserves.

Should Liverpool tie Wijnaldum down?

Only time will tell as to whether Gini will be a Liverpool player at the start of next season but one thing is for sure, he doesn’t seem hugely keen on leaving.
