It now seems that it is a two horse race between the captains of Liverpool and Chelsea as to who will be the next England captain.

To be given the role of captain for a great footballing nation such as England is a huge honour and the victor will instantly gain legendary status. A prize worth having.

Now, we have all heard both players saying publically that they would like to become the next captain, but honestly who wouldn’t?

It is thought by many that John Terry is infact the favourate to get the nod. This can be supported by the fact that Gareth Southgate, a centre back, was the captain of Middlesbrough during Mclaren’s rein.

Terry has shown over recent years his undenyable leadership qualitys and is arguably the only player in the Chelsea squad with true grit and determination.

However after bigging up JT (with gritted teeth) im pleased to say im in full support of Gerrard becoming the new captain of England. And whatever you may think its not just because im a Liverpool fan.

Lets take a moment and think back to May 25th 2005 in Istanbul. The Gerrard goal in the 54th minutue was when it was blindingly obvious that this guy was born to inspire and to lead. Without Gerrard, not just as a player but as a captain, AC Milan would not have been stripped of that title.

His limitless passion and desire to play the game and his incredible work rate make him a prime candidate for the job.

With any luck (and a few brain cells) Steve Mclaren will make a good start to his managerial careewith England and choose Gerrard as the new England captain.
