Liverpool clawed themselves back into a match that we then let slip away with a 3-2 defeat against fierce rivals ManU on Sunday afternoon. Roy Hodgson believed that we deserved to come back from two nil down to make it two all, as we did, but was disappointed in the way we conceded goals (even though one of Dimitar Berbatov’s goals was brilliant), as he explained to Sky Sports:

‘I thought our second-half performance was good and I think we deserved to get back in the game.

‘I thought we were a bit unlucky to go 2-0 down when we did and, of course, to concede late on is always tough.

‘The three goals were from crosses – one a corner kick – and there is disappointment in that, but otherwise I thought we made a really good effort in the second half to bring us back in the game.’

Fernando Torres was central to both of our goals, winning the penalty and free kicks that Stevie Gerrard scored from on each occasion, however the Spaniard was again below his best with Roy admitting as much but the Reds Boss does believe that he’s improving after his injury problems, adding:

‘It was a lot better, there’s no doubt about that.

‘Fernando is still a player who needs more games and needs more time and more training. We will get a lot of tremendous use out of him over the course of the year.

‘I think he was a lot better than the game against Birmingham, but I don’t think he’s firing on all cylinders.

‘Having said that, we are playing against a very good team in Manchester United who don’t surrender the ball to you that often.’

It was a frustrating afternoon wasn’t it. In my honest opinion I didn’t think we deserved to lose and when we came back to level at 2-2 I expected us to see the match through and get a point. This, as it was against ManU to boot, is a tough one to accept.
