Super Stevie G and Peerless Pepe Reina shared the Vital-Liverpool vote for man of the match away following our shakey but important 2-1 midweek victory over Marseille.
We asked VL subsribers to pick their MOM from the list of 14 players who took the field at some point in the Stade Velodrome, and there were two clear winners.
Stevie actually shaded the overall voting, polling 46% of opinions with Pepe the Magnificent a nose-hair behind with 42%. Considering how far they were ahead of the other twelve, it seemed only fair to pool them together in the final reckoning.
Ryan Babel came in third after a useful display, though his tally of 4% indicated that he paled compared to the big two who really influenced the game. While Jamie Carragher somewhat surprisingly only managed 4th place with 3%. Obviously blame for the goal we conceded hasn’t been entirely wiped away.
5 other players took 1% of the vote; a tired Fernando Torres who will look to get his goal train up and running again at the weekend, a much-improved Arbeloa who continued his good work from last saturday and seems to be winning over some doubters. Mascherano and Kuyt were both somewhat off the pace during the game; no doubt as a result of the 200km or so they each ran around Anfield last weekend, and finally Skrtel was the fifth. I’m puzzled as to the whereabouts of a certain Mr D. Agger, but while he’s not around, with Hyypia unavailable for CL games, Skrtel is filling in nicely.
Dossena, Leiva, Riera, Lucas, Benayoun and Keane all failed to register a vote as this was a night for induviduals.

Many thanks to Bosko-Macedonia for suggesting this poll.
In the new poll we’ve put up, you’re asked; What will the score be on Saturday against Stoke City?
Love the nicknames, Naoise!
Lol, well yeah I was feeling a little generous 🙂
Would have to be Gerrard surely. Another three-points rescuing performance from him.
I voted for Peerless Pepe, if it wasn’t for him we would’ve lost the game even with Gerrard’s two goals.
You’re welcome in any time, Naoise :D.
i agree with JD on this one
Again I’m with you JohnDoe, goals win matches but saves stop these goals don’t they, which would have of course won the match for Marseille!
