TalkSPORT pundit and former Manchester City defender Danny Mills has claimed that Lionel Messi wouldn’t currently make it into Liverpool’s starting XI or any other side in the top six.

Messi didn’t have the best of starts to life in Paris, after joining the French giants from Barcelona last summer in a blockbuster transfer that shocked the football world.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner only managed to scrape 11 goals in all competitions and was plagued by injuries throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

Nevertheless, the claims from Mills are questionable, to say the least, Messi is regarded as the best to ever play the game and has virtually been at the top of his game for countless years on end until last season.

Mills, however, did state that Messi was the best he’s ever seen play live but on current form, he believes the former Barcelona man couldn’t cut it in the harsh Premier League calendar.

The former Manchester City man said: “I think he is the greatest footballer I have ever seen. I didn’t see Cruyff live, I didn’t see Maradona. Messi is the greatest footballer I have ever seen.

“I know Ronaldo’s numbers may be slightly better and he’s more of a big game player and all of the rest of it, but, in terms of a pure footballer, Messi is the greatest. But, would you take Messi now in your team? Probably not.

“We’re talking Premier League aren’t we realistically. Liverpool wouldn’t take him, City wouldn’t take him. Tottenham wouldn’t take him, no I don’t think they would.”
