Liverpool under-21s captain Tom Clayton has left the club ending his 13-year stay on Merseyside, after failing to make it into Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squads.

Clayton is the club’s fourth sale of the summer and he joins Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino in leaving the club.

The youngster has joined League 2 side Swindon Town in the hope of gaining more first-team action and progressing his career in the lower tier of the English leagues.

Clayton’s versatility makes him a solid signing for Swindon, the 21-year-old can play centre-back and defensive midfield and captained Liverpool’s under-23s team for the majority of last season.

Swindon will be hoping that Clayton can guide them to promotion this season, after missing out in the Play-Off semi-finals in their last campaign to Port Vale.

Clayton spoke of his excitement to join the League 2 club and chatted about the move on Swindon Town’s official club website.

“Having spoken to a number of people about the club before signing I knew this was the place I wanted to play my football and take the next step in my career, so it wasn’t a hard decision at all.

“I’m itching to get started and push myself hard here. I want to become a first-team regular and show the fans what I’m about.

“This is a great club with superb ambition, and I really want to be part of this exciting project moving forward.”
