Cafu, Brazil’s famous right-back, says he “doesn’t understand” Trent Alexander-Arnold’s treatment by the English national team manager Gareth Southgate.
Cafu has won nearly everything possible in World football. his accolades include two World Cups, two Serie A championships, and one Champions League (which he did win by beating Liverpool).
Trent is regarded as one of the best creative right-backs in the world. However, despite his success, he remains a supporting figure for Gareth Southgate’s England team. Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to start England’s last World Cup group-stage game against Wales. However, Gareth Southgate is set to make changes. Trent will be on the bench once more. He has yet to play a single minute in Qatar’s FIFA World Cup.
Cafu told Gazzetta dello Sport that he sees parallels between Trent’s condition and that of his and Roberto Carlos during their illustrious careers. Cafu went on to say, “I don’t understand why [he attracts criticism]. He’s the full package. He has quality, dribbling skills, and pace. But it’s always the same thing. They say you don’t defend and sit you [out]. They used to do the same thing to Roberto Carlos and me, but I’d argue we managed to win something anyway.”
It’s stunning that Southgate is unable to see what Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola can do when it comes to two ‘generational’ talents. These players have won almost everything at the club level. Klopp has constructed his team around Alexander’s ingenuity and creative intelligence. As a result, Klopp’s approach has led Liverpool to incredible success.
Cafu hopes the situation changes for Trent Alexander Arnold sooner rather than later.
