Caoimhin Kelleher makes history in Reds victory

|

Liverpool goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, made history as the Reds defeated Derby County on penalties in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Irishman made three vital saves in the penalty shootout to send his side through to the next round of the competition, after the match finished 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Kelleher has now made more saves in penalty shootouts than any other goalkeeper in Liverpool’s history, with six saves.

You’ve got to feel for Kelleher really, every time he puts on that Liverpool shirt he plays extremely well. However, he is in competition with the best goalkeeper in the world in Alisson Becker which leaves him with a very limited number of opportunities.

Last night was the keeper’s first appearance of the season, but I would expect to see him play between the sticks for any Carabao Cup or FA Cup fixtures this season, in the same way he did last season on the way to lifting both trophies.

There’s definitely a case to be made that Liverpool have the best back-up goalkeeper in the Premier League, except maybe Edouard Mendy at Chelsea.

Performances like these will no doubt be pushing Kelleher towards wanting more first-team football, but as a fan hopefully he isn’t thinking about leaving anytime soon.
