Liverpool: Stats Preview 17/18 – Chelsea (Away)

A selection of the key facts, figures and statistics ahead of the league fixture with Chelsea…

Another Premier League outing is fast approaching for Liverpool FC and, as per usual, we’ve been trawling the record books to bring you all the facts, figures and statistics you need to know about it.

Liverpool return to domestic duties on Sunday after the midweek high of securing a place in the Champions League final against AS Roma in Italy.

Facing them, in their penultimate league fixture of the season, is a trip to one of the two teams who can still overtake the third-placed Reds in the standings – Chelsea.

A draw will prevent that possibility and secure Jürgen Klopp‘s side a place in next season’s Champions League, regardless of the outcome of the 2017/18 final against Real Madrid in Kiev later this month.

Here’s what caught our eye:

• Liverpool and Chelsea have contested 178 competitive matches during their respective histories with Liverpool leading overall courtesy of 77 wins to 61 defeats and 40 draws (source: 11v11.com).
• Liverpool are unbeaten in the last six meetings between the two (W2, D4), with both of their wins coming at Stamford Bridge.
• The only team to win three times in a row away to Chelsea in the Premier League are Blackburn Rovers (1993/94 – 1995/96).
• All four draws during the period have been by a scoreline of 1-1.
• Chelsea last endured a longer winless run against the Reds in the top-flight between 1985 and 1990 (10 games).
• Both teams have scored in 12 of the last 13 Premier League meetings between these sides, with the Londoners the only side to keep a clean sheet in that run (2-0 at Anfield in April 2014).
• Liverpool’s run of 13 league games without a clean sheet against Chelsea is their longest such run against a specific opponent in the top-flight since a streak of 17 against Blackburn (between 1947 and 1995).
• The Blues are on a three match winning run in the league with the trio of victories all coming via a single goal margin.
• Liverpool have drawn their last two fixtures including a 0-0 draw with Stoke City last Saturday. They have not failed to score in two consecutive Premier League games since August 2015 (vs. Arsenal and West Ham United).
• Mohamed Salah, who scored against his former club at Anfield in November, still needs one more goal to set a new 38-game Premier League scoring record. The Egyptian forward is currently tied with Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez on 31.
• By scoring against Swansea City last time out, Cesc Fabregas became only the fourth player to score 50+ goals and register 100+ assists in the Premier League (after Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard), and the first non-British player to do so.
• Olivier Giroud has made an impact since moving to Chelsea from Arsenal in January but hasn’t scored in any of his last six Premier League starts, with his last six goals in the competition all coming as a sub. The Frenchman has scored four goals in his last five Premier League starts against Liverpool.
