With the World Cup beginning on Sunday and no domestic football being played until December 19th, it leaves us a good opportunity to reflect on Liverpool’s season so far.

August-

Off the back of Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield in July, many fans were excited and optimistic heading into the start of the new campaign.

However, the Reds got off to a frustrating start to the season in a 2-2 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on the opening day of the season. Aleksander Mitrovic tore apart Jurgen Klopp’s defence, with super-sub, Darwin Nunez, claiming a goal and an assist to save his side a point.

The following week, Luis Diaz followed suit and salvaged a point in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield, a game in which Darwin Nunez was sent off for an ugly headbutt on Joachim Andersen.

Things went from bad to worse for Jurgen Klopp as a Manchester United side who had just lost 4-0 to Brentford a week before, defeated his side 2-1 at Old Trafford leaving the Reds with just two points from their opening three games.

Thankfully, in perhaps their best performance of the season, Liverpool ended the month in spectacular fashion. First of all with a 9-0 win over Bournemouth at Anfield which saw Roberto Firmino, Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, Fabio Carvalho and Luis Diaz all getting on the scoresheet.

A last-minute winner by Fabio Carvalho then lead Liverpool to an impressive 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield, which still stands as the Magpies’ only defeat so far this season.

Were these results the start of Liverpool’s resurgence or just a blimp? We will have a look at the month of September in part two.
