In an interview with ITV Sport, Trent Alexander Arnold opened up about his ability as a defender. His defensive frailties have been a major talking point throughout his career.
This season he has been at fault for conceding some goal-scoring opportunities. However, when we look at his defensive stats, things are not as bad as they seem. However, the media has made it a talking point whenever he lines up either for Liverpool or for England.
His defensive issues almost saw him miss out on getting selected for England in the World Cup squad. However, better sense prevailed and Gareth Southgate included one of the best right backs in World Football in his squad for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Jurgen Klopp has time and again hit out regarding this debate on whether Trent can defend or not. Recently he mentioned that he does not understand why this discussion is had at almost every juncture. The fact that Trent has change and revolutionized the right back position takes a back seat and whenever he makes a mistake that gets highlighted rather than the overall contribution that he makes across the pitch for Liverpool.
In an interview with UOL, Brazil FC legend, Roberto Carlos mentioned, “English players that I would take for Brazil in the World Cup? Trent Alexander-Arnold, he’s one of the best.” This coming from one of the best ever in that position is enough to help put the debate to rest.
