Seven Liverpool academy players going to Qatar

|

The World Cup fever is here. The FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar is about to kick off later today.

While chances to see the current crop of Liverpool players in action will be limited, Liverpool fans will have the opportunity to see 15 of their former players play for their respective nationalities while fighting for the most coveted football trophy on the planet, the FIFA World Cup.

These 15 players represent ten different countries. Seven of the 15 former players came up through the club’s academy. This clearly highlights the quality of players coming through the Liverpool academy and their path to greatness whether they end up playing for the Liverpool first team or decide to move to another club across Europe or the globe.

Unfortunately, ex-Red winger Sadio Mane will not be on the list after an injury has ruled him out of representing Senegal. This blow will also significantly affect Mo Salah, as Mane’s team knocked them out of the final qualifier. As a result, none of Liverpool’s latest Red attackers, Salah, Mane, and Roberto Firmino, will be playing in the World Cup.

From a Liverpool perspective, here is a list of fifteen former Liverpool players who will be representing their nations in the Qatar World Cup.

  • Belgium (Group F) – Simon Mignolet
  • Canada (Group F) – Liam Millar
  • Croatia (Group F) – Dejan Lovren
  • England (Group B) – Conor Coady and Raheem Sterling
  • Japan (Group E) – Takumi Minamino
  • Poland (Group C) – Kamil Grabara
  • Serbia (Group G) – Marko Grujic
  • Switzerland (Group G) – Xherdan Shaqiri
  • Uruguay (Group H) – Sebastian Coates and Luis Suarez
  • Wales (Group B) – Danny Ward, Neco Williams, Joe Allen, and Harry Wilson
