|

Liverpool have always been blessed with very talented footballers, with many going on to play on the World’s biggest stage- the World Cup.

Here is all of Liverpool’s World Cup record holders (via Wikipedia) throughout their illustrious history:

First Liverpool player to play at the World Cup:

The first ever Liverpool player to ever appear at a World Cup was Laurie Hughes for England at the 1950 World Cup.

The defender went on to make two more appearances for England as well as 303 league appearances for Liverpool.

Most World Cup appearances as a Liverpool player:

Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, holds the record for the most World Cup appearances as a Liverpool player- representing England 12 times at the World Cup in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

The midfielder made 504 league appearances for the Reds, scoring 120 goals in the process whilst also carrying the Merseyside club to a Champions League triumph in 2005.

Most World Cup goals as a Liverpool player:

Former Striker, Michael Owen, holds the record for most World Cup goals as a Liverpool player with four goals over the course of the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

Current forward, Darwin Nunez, will have his eyes on the record as he represents Uruguay at the Qatar World Cup.

First Liverpool players to win the World Cup:

Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Gerry Byrne were all part of the iconic England 1966 side that was the first and last time the Three Lions have lifted the trophy.

Hunt played all six games, scoring three goals over the course of the tournament to etch his name into the English history books.

Ian Callaghan just made one appearance which was against France in the group stage.

First non-British Liverpool player to appear in a World Cup final:

The first non-British Liverpool player to play in a World Cup final was former midfielder, Dietmar Hamann for Germany back in 2002.

Hamann was one of Germany’s standout performers at the tournament, playing a huge role in helping his side make the final.

First non-British Liverpool players to win a World Cup:

Spanish duo, Pepe Reina and Fernando Torres, were the first non-British Liverpool players to win the World Cup as they were part of the squad to lead their country to victory back in 2010.

Neither player played as big of a part as they perhaps had hoped, with the likes of Iker Casillas and David Villa keeping the Liverpool duo out of the starting lineup during the competition.
