Following his appearance on the radio show TalkSPORT yesterday – former Premier League striker Darren Bent shared his opinions on current Reds forward Roberto Firmino.

The 36-tear-old stated that despite Firmino’s obvious talent and quality, he doesn’t have a place in Jurgen Klopp’s current XI right now…

I understand Darren Bent’s point in regards to the fact that he wouldn’t push Sadio Mané or Mo Salah out of the side which is correct – one because Mané and Salah are the goalscorers in the team, and two because Firmino isn’t a winger!

Of course he wouldn’t push to pair out of the side, you would never see Klopp put Firmino on the wing so his thoughts on the matter don’t exactly kick off with the best start…

He then goes on to say about Diogo Jota and his current goalscoring form which there is no doubt that the Portuguese forward deserves his chance in the starting XI. It is getting tiresome, however, having to hear people’s thoughts and opinions on Firmino’s lack of goalscoring given the fact that isn’t even his role within the side.

Was Diogo Jota Liverpool's best signing in the summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

What Jota has done since joining is fantastic – the forward has brought a new dimension to Liverpool’s front line and has provided Klopp quality in rotation depending on his approach to each game this season but it is unfair and unjust for the Firmino slander to just be so casually just simply because of Jota’s form.

Firmino is a key member of the squad and has played such an important role for the Reds over recent years with us winning the Premier League and Champions League – so I have to disagree with Bent’s comments that he should be dropped, or that he should be played at the tip of the midfield as a central attacking midfielder as I don’t feel his role and qualities will be as effective there.
