Yesterday proved a tough game in the Liverpool calendar, with them losing 4-1 to Manchester City at Anfield with them all but out of the title race for this season with the focus now shifting to ensuring a top-four finish.

Despite a positive start to the game Liverpool ultimately collapsed throughout the game with Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson making two errors that lead to a goal for Manchester City – with the rest of the Reds squad failing to make an impact at the other end of the field. The game showed just how low in confidence this squad is and the mentality of the boys is completely shot to pieces.

The Athletic’s James Pearce took to Twitter after the game to share his views on the result, with him pointing out that the Reds’ attempts to retain the title this season are all but gone and the focus should now shift to securing a top-four finish…

It is hard to disagree with Pearce here given how poorly the Reds have been at times this season – I went into the game yesterday thinking City would come out on top but not quite in the fashion that it happened.

Phil Foden was fantastic yesterday and was at the heart of the attack for City throughout the majority of the game, with him clearly giving the runaround to the Liverpool defence and even midfield with the whole of the Liverpool team failing to keep up with City’s tempo during the second half and looking a world away from their best over the past few seasons.

Are Liverpool out of the title race?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Liverpool are not the high flying team they were over the past few years with them looking zapped of energy and inspiration this season and whether that is down to the absences in injuries this season still doesn’t warrant the squad looking as though they don’t even want to give 110% no matter what and it is a shame to see.

Despite the results and the rough patch the squad are going through, we must get behind the team and give them as much confidence as possible to help get them out of this period.
