Even though Aston Villa held his side to a 1-1 home draw, Kop boss Kenny Dalglish was happy with the character and commitment shown.

An improved showing still required a late Luis Suarez goal to earn the Reds a point and the result does little to relieve the pressure on Dalglish or his underachieving players who had previously suffered three straight defeats.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Dalglish commented: “I thought they showed great character and commitment to come back. I thought it was a great effort from them.

“Aston Villa got a goal and that gave them something to hold on to, but the longer the game went on, the stronger we got and the more determined we got to get a goal.

“We did get a goal but I think we deserved more than that. Most of the things that are in our control we did our best to do them.”

During the contest referee Michael Oliver turned down three strong penalty appeals from Liverpool whilst an early Dirk Kuyt effort also appeared to cross the line. Suarez also received a yellow card for diving despite there being obvious contact from Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland.

“What chance have we got?” reflected Dalglish on the incidents.

“Even Suarez’s booking, the guy trod on him.

“You can imagine the headlines tomorrow when he’s been booked for diving but the guy’s actually trodden on him. He’s lucky he’s not broke his foot.

“We just need to keep going. Maybe we’re too polite! If we keep trying it’ll turn.”
