Former Liverpool player Jan Molby has voiced his support for Kenny Dalglish and believes the Scot is still the right man to take the Reds forward.

The classy Danish midfielder has become the latest high profile person with links to the club to speak about the so-called ‘crisis’ engulfing Liverpool FC. The 48-year-old’s remarks to the Liverpool ECHO follow those of his former team mate John Aldridge and one time manager Roy Evans, who both spoke to the same publication earlier in the week.

The club’s current run has been well documented and most fans will be able to recite a host of damning statistics at will. Six defeats in the last seven league fixtures, only 8 points earned from 12 league games during 2012, the worse run since 1954; these are just three of the standout figures which make sorry reading for Kopites everywhere.

Despite the doom and gloom Molby analysed: “Everyone feels frustrated by recent results, but I still believe Kenny Dalglish is the right man for Liverpool FC.

“We can’t become a club which changes its manager every time we hit rocky waters.

“I believe there’s a plan in place and a buying policy to move the club forward. Progress isn’t always smooth and patience is in short supply these days, but we need to stick with it.

“I think deep down most fans knew it was always going to take time.

“The best way to move forward is with what’s in place at the moment and we have to trust the owners to make the right decisions.

“This is a tough spell for Kenny. Any manager during a poor run of results has a lot of problems to address. With every defeat, there’s more ammunition for the critics and more negativity.

“He sees the players every day and he will be trying to find a spark, thinking about what changes he can make to get the team back firing again.

“We’ve got two games against Villa and Blackburn before we head to Wembley, and we desperately need to find some confidence going into what will be a real battle against Everton.

“One of the reasons players want to play for Liverpool is that the support you get when you pull on that shirt is unrivalled. At times like this, the players need the backing of the fans more than ever.”

Molby spent almost 12 years at Anfield after being signed by Joe Fagan from Dutch giants Ajax in August 1984. The Great Dane amassed a staggering 292 appearances in total for Liverpool playing under a succession of different managers before leaving to become player-manager of Swansea City in February 1996. Whilst on Merseyside Molby picked up two league championships and two FA Cups. Most spectators would probably agree, the man who started his career at his hometown club Kolding, enjoyed his best period during current boss Dalglish’s first spell in charge. The popular figure was also made an ‘Honourary Scouser’ by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool in April 2009.
