Following the abrupt sacking of Liverpool’s Director of Football Damien Comolli, the pressure on manager Kenny Dalglish appears to be mounting despite the Scot receiving the board’s dreaded vote of confidence.
Club chairman Tom Werner told the official LFC website: “We’ve got great confidence in Kenny.
“We feel the team is going to make strides in the future and he enjoys our full support.”
The ruthless nature of Comolli’s dismissal, plus that of the club’s Head of Sports Science & Medicine (Dr Peter Brukner), suggest however that actions speak louder than words at club owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
Given his side’s terrible league form this season time is not likely to be on Dalglish’s side if he is to be the man to turn the current slump around.
Chief support for the 61-year-old has again come in the shape of former Liverpool boss Roy Evans. The popular Anfield figure, who managed the club for four years between 1994-98, recently appealed for everyone to stick together and has now claimed that FSG need to remain patient with the existing staff.
“Stability is hugely important in football,” Evans told Yahoo Sports.
“Nowadays in football, the players never seem to bear any responsibility when things go wrong and it is always the manager who gets blamed.
“You see some clubs chopping and changing managers at will, and something needs to be done about that.
“You look at the most successful clubs, and they are the ones where the manager has been given time to get his feet under the table and do his job properly.
“Owners need to show some patience, and realise you cannot simply buy success while changing the manager every season.”
Despite offering encouragement, Evans did concede that the performances on the pitch simply haven’t matched up to expectations this season and will have to improve in the future.
Evans continued: “[Dalglish] had a good start, he brought that desire and you hoped the team would go on, but unfortunately that has been derailed a little bit.
“They have won the Carling Cup, and it’s great to win a trophy in your first full year, and they have a chance of another in the FA Cup.
“But I think everybody recognises their league form hasn’t been good enough – that’s not to criticise Kenny, it’s just a fact.
“They have struggled to win games at home and haven’t been their usual force – and I’m sure everyone at the club is doing their utmost to put that right.”
