Liverpool head to the World Cup break with a victory

|

Liverpool came out 3-1 winners against Southampton in their final game before the World Cup international break begins for the Reds.

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Darwin Nunez were enough to secure Jurgen Klopp’s men their three points despite Che Adams’ goal for the Saints in the first half.

Firmino headed home an Andy Robertson cross early in the game, proving why many believe he should have been included in Brazil’s World Cup squad.

The lead didn’t last long as the visitors equalised from their own set piece with Adams also heading the ball past Alisson from a delightful James Ward-Prowse free kick.

In the 20th minute, Liverpool’s record signing Darwin Nunez slotted the ball past the keeper from an unbelievable pass from youngster Harvey Elliott to restore the home side’s lead.

On the stroke of half-time, the Uruguayan grabbed his second goal of the game as Robertson notched his second assist of the game.

A few world-class saves from Alisson kept the Reds ahead in the second half, with Klopp’s men missing several chances themselves.

Liverpool certainly seemed to have that rhythm that has been lacking at points this season, as well as being much more clinical in the final third of the pitch.

The victory sees Liverpool off into the World Cup, the next time we will see them in action will be against Manchester City at the Etihad in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on December 19th.
