Liverpool knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton

|

Liverpool have been knocked out of the FA Cup in the Fourth Round after a 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

Kaoru Mitoma’s last minute winner completed a comeback after Harvey Elliott’s first half goal, to send the Seagulls into the draw for the Fifth Round.

Both sides started brightly with chances falling to the likes of Mohamed Salah and Solly March in the opening exchanges.

Salah had a golden chance to give the Reds the lead when Harvey Elliott put him one-on-one with Jason Steele, but slid the ball around the far post.

Not long after, the Egyptian returned the favour, sliding a lovely ball through the home defence where Elliott was on hand to slot the ball past the keeper.

That strike was the 19-year-old’s fifth goal of the season, scoring two in two games in the FA Cup.

Liverpool’s lead only lasted nine minutes, as Lewis Dunk deflected Tariq Lamptey’s long-range effort past Alisson Becker to level the score.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were in control of the second half until substitutes caused all rhythm to be lost.

Both Fabinho and Andy Robertson were fortunate not to receive red cards for two awful tackles on Evan Ferguson and Alexis MacAllister.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Mitoma flicked the ball past both Joe Gomez and Darwin Nunez before poking the ball into the roof of the net to send his side through to the next round.

Liverpool have just one win in their last six games now, losing four of them.

Their next game sees them travel to the Midlands to face Wolves in the Premier League as they look to put yet another defeat right.
