According to French media outlet Foot Mercato, Liverpool is interested in Montpellier striker Elye Wahi. The 20-year-old French attacker has sparked the interest of numerous Premier League teams. The teams that are showing interest in the young striker are Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester City. Also, Italian giants, Juventus are looking to sign him up too. The rumours coming out of the player’s camp are that he is not interested in making a switch mid-season and wants to see this season through at Montpellier.
Despite the interest, Wahi is under contract with Montpellier until 2025, making a January transfer move unlikely. Wahi is thought to be worth roughly £26 million. This is an amount that could fit the transfer policy for Liverpool’s owners.
Elye Wahi is only the second player in Ligue 1 history to score 20 goals before turning 20. He is behind Kylian Mbappé but ahead of Karim Benzema and Thierry Henry when it comes to this record. Last season, the teenage attacker enjoyed a breakthrough season. He scored 10 goals in 33 appearances which earned him recognition within the French football federation. No wonder some of Europe’s biggest teams are keeping an eye on him.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will make a play for Wahi in the future. He might be Roberto Firmino’s successor, depending on where the striker decides to play once his Liverpool contract expires.
In addition to that, with the recent acquisition of Cody Gakpo, another forward addition does seem very unlikely. It will have to be seen how Jurgen Klopp will move to begin this rebuild of Liverpool to make them a force to reckon with once again.
