Liverpool kick off Dubai Super Cup with defeat to Lyon

|

Fabio Cavralho’s early opener wasn’t enough as Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by French side, Olympique Lyon, in their first game in the Dubai Super Cup.

The Portuegese forward put the Reds ahead just 40 seconds into the game after a well worked attacking move.

The Egyptian King, Mohamed Salah, had a chance to double his sides lead in the 14th minute after Roberto Firmino won the Reds a penalty, however Salah was unable to convert as Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes saved with his feet.

Former Arsenal striker, Alexandre Lacazette, equalised for the French side on the stroke of half time with a goal from close range.

The second half saw a long list of changes made by Jurgen Klopp, with the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Kostas Tsimikas, Bobby Clark, Adrian and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all coming on.

On the hour mark, Klopp made even more changes with the likes of Naby Keita, Ben Doak, Luke Chambers, Layton Stewart and Dominic Corness all entering the pitch.

The Reds’ substitutes didn’t come with a punishment as Bradley Barcola put Lyon ahead, with youngster Rayan Cherki getting the assist.

Lacazette put the game to bed for Lyon with eight minutes to go, as Liverpool couldn’t seem to bring together any proper rhythm to their game.

One stupid rule of the Dubai Super Cup is that regardless of the result after 90 minutes, a penalty shootout must take place.

Lyon converted all five of their spot kicks, whilst Kostas Tsimikas, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all converting theirs for the Reds.

However, young full-back Calvin Ramsay was unfortunate to see his penalty saved to give Lyon the win.
