With the January transfer window fast approaching and Liverpool in the market for a central defensive signing after the injuries to both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – the club have been linked to a number of players over the past few months.

The latest addition to the rumour mill, however, does not come in the form of a defender but instead a midfielder by the name of Marcos Llorente, the 25-year-old Spanish midfielder for Atletico Madrid.

Since joining the club from rivals Real Madrid last summer, Llorente has gone on to become a pivotal member of Diego Simeone’s squad and even helped to dump the Reds out of the Champions League last season after their shock 3-2 victory over the Reds at Anfield in March, with Llorente netting 2 goals and an assist during the game.

The midfielder is currently valued at £40.50 million according to Transfermarkt and wouldn’t come cheap for the Reds if they were to make a move. According to the midfielder’s agent, he has received ‘many calls’ from Liverpool over the player’s availability and the possibility of a transfer.

Llorente has been directly involved in 17 goals in his first 53 appearances for Atletico and has shown great versatility, being able to play in midfield as well as a centre-forward, something that will no doubt please Jurgen Klopp who often relies on his player’s abilities to cover different positions on the pitch.

There are some similarities in the way both Liverpool and Atletico play, with a high press and strong and fast counter-attacks something that makes up a lot of the two club’s tactics and style of play. I would love to see a player of Llorente’s ability at the club and he would make for a great addition in midfield for the Reds.
