With Liverpool in desperate need of further reinforcements in defence with a lack of options at the back due to injuries, the club has been linked with plenty of defenders over the past few months ahead of this month’s transfer window.

One of the names that had been linked with the club is former Arsenal central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos but at the time of the initial link, he was still playing for the Gunners.

The Greek international recently got released by Arsenal after agreeing to terminate his contract early and according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Reds made contact with him last week to get a further understanding of his current situation but the conversations never progressed further than that, as cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter…

As mentioned, the conversations never progressed past simply checking on his status and I think that would probably be best. No disrespect to Sokratis at all, he was a fantastic defender under Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund and has proven himself many a time with the German club winning trophies galore.

His time at Arsenal was far from his best after the North London club paid £14.40 million but that is no doubt due to him being 32 now and at the tail end of his career – and I don’t think he’d of been the best solution for our current issues in defence.

It has also been rumoured that the defender will be joining Olympiakos in the same piece by Ornstein so it will be a player that the Reds will leave alone despite their inquiries.

Youngsters such as Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have had the pressure piled on so far this season with the amount that has been asked of them and with our owners unlikely to provide Klopp with a short term fix until the end of the season, we will have to wait until the summer to see which avenue the club take.

What do you think Liverpool fans, would Sokratis have been a good addition? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below…
