Plenty of defenders were linked with a move to Anfield yesterday during the January transfer deadline day, with the Reds enquiring all over Europe to discover their options for the rest of the season.

The Reds finally secured the signatures of Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak from Schalke 04 for a staggering combined fee of just £1.5 million which is an incredible bit of business given the calibre of players we have added to the squad.

One player that was on the club’s radar was Bayer Leverkusen’s Burkinese centre-back Edmond Tapsoba who is currently rated at £27 million according to Transfermarkt but the Reds were essentially priced out of a deal with the Bundesliga demanding a minimum fee of €50 million from Liverpool which led to them not pursuing a deal for the 22-year-old as cited by LFCTransferRoom on Twitter…

The young centre-back is highly rated and has been a fantastic addition to the German side since joining them from Portuguese club Vitoria just over a year ago.

Liverpool may not have carried out their interest in Tapsoba but they did manage to bring in two new defenders in the form of Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak from Schalke 04 – with the latter easily for me alongside Tapsoba as two of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga and it clearly shows the quality that the reds have attracted and been able to bring to Anfield before the end of the season.

Did Liverpool have a successful January window?

Whether Liverpool goes back for Tapsoba in the summer is unknown but one thing is for sure, the club will have plenty more funds in their purse come the summer.
