Liverpool faced their second loss of the Premier League season last night with a frustrating and difficult 1-0 loss to Southampton after a difficult run of games that has left the Reds with a mountain to climb against second-place Manchester United next week.

For much of the game, chances failed to be converted and the opportunities for the Liverpool forwards were few and far between with much of the squad failing to perform to the standards that are expected and that they can reach.

It was difficult to really single out a player after such a frustrating watch but one Liverpool player really did manage to try and make a big difference going forward and was consistently driving forward when not being hacked down by the Southampton defence – an that was Sadio Mané

The Senegalese winger was constantly going forward and caused real trouble on that left-hand side for the Reds with Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, and Jack Stephens all facing a big issue when facing up against the winger throughout the game with them consistently bringing the player down and keeping close tabs on him when Mané in possession.

Mané was a constant threat going forward with him registering 4 shots and 5 successful dribbles going forward and time again it seemed as though he was being targeted by the Saint’s defence.

Not only that but Mané managed a great shift defensively too with him managing 6 tackles won when dispossessing the opposition players – highlighting his effort in both aspects of the game and for me, he seemed as though he was the only player that posed a threat for the Reds throughout the agonising loss.

It was a difficult result overall and will be one that Jurgen Klopp and his side will be left ruing with the challenge up ahead against an inform Manchester United team.
