If Liverpool’s season hadn’t already been strange enough with injuries, absences, and drama – Egypt’s U23’s coach Shawky Gharib announced his preliminary squad for the 2021 Olympic Games on Saturday and has included the club’s £99m-rated winger Mohamed Salah.

The news comes as a surprising one for the club and the fans, with the Olympic Games this year taking place in Tokyo and would mean that Salah would miss Liverpool’s pre-season and the start of the 2021/22 campaign – something that manager Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be very unhappy about.

Despite the obvious raised eyebrows from the club and fans, it appears as though Egypt will try everything they can to have Salah in the squad, as cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter via LiverpoolEcho…

According to the Daily Mail, Egypt are still yet to even talk to Klopp of the club about their decision and have stated that official discussions will start after the international break at the end of this month.

Not only that, but they have also failed to even speak to Salah about the decision which will no doubt cause frustration and tension between the player, the club, and his countries FA given how the situation has been approached early on.

Is Mo Salah already a Liverpool legend?

No

It would be frustrating to have him missing for the start of the season and would definitely leave the club at a disadvantage for the start of their season where they will no doubt be attempting to contend for the title again given this season’s poor fortunes.

The Egyptian FA have a history of upsetting the club and causing tension with Salah, but hopefully, this time around matters can be resolved quickly as I really wouldn’t want to see us start next season without him.
