The door to Champions League football starts to open for Liverpool

|

Liverpool have received more good luck as other results have gone their way following their fortunate 2-1 victory against Leicester City on Friday night.

A seven minute disasterclass from Leicester defender, Wout Faes, saw the Reds clinch all three points in their final game of the calendar year.

To make things better for Jurgen Klopp’s men, both Manchester City and Newcastle United dropped points in games they should really be winning.

City were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at the Etihad Stadium, as Demarai Gray’s equaliser ruled out the weekly Erling Haaland goal.

In the North-East, Newcastle couldn’t break down Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United with that game finishing 0-0.

One slight negative was Manchester United’s 1-0 victory at Wolves, which moves them into the top four before Tottenham Hotspur face Aston Villa.

The weekend’s results so far leave Liverpool still in 6th place in the Premier League, but now only six points behind Newcastle United in 3rd with a game in hand on the magpies too, and now just eight points behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

That may still sound like a large points gap, but baring in mind Liverpool were fourteen points behind City in February last season and managed to take the league title down to the last ten minutes of the final game.

If there’s one thing people should’ve learned about Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool sides, is that you should never rule them out no matter how bad things seem.

The signing of Cody Gakpo will also certainly help Liverpool as they look to build on their fine recent form as they continue to climb the table.
