The impact of VAR on Liverpool’s season so far

|

Liverpool have benefitted from VAR more than any other club in the Premier League, according to recent research carried out by The Daily Mail.

The research claims that Jurgen Klopp’s side would be just six points above the relegation zone if it wasn’t for the use of VAR.

The Daily Mail explained the calculations by saying: “The altered table is calculated by taking the first VAR overturn in each game – working on the theory that any subsequent incident would not have occured – while also taking in factors such as XG at the time of the incident and team form.”

Whilst the Reds have apparently gained six points due to VAR, Leeds United have lost five points due to the use of the technology.

Manchester United are the next club to have benefited from the use of VAR, as without it they would apparently be fifth and Tottenham Hotspur would be third in the Premier League.

There is two reported incidents that have caused the gain of six points for Liverpool, one being Conor Coady’s disallowed goal in the Merseyside Derby for Everton and the other being Phil Foden’s disallowed goal for Manchester City at Anfield.

I find this research a bit of a stretch, to be completely honest.

Conor Coady’s goal was rightfully given as offside so it would be wrong to claim Liverpool should’ve lost that match.

The Foden goal at Anfield is a bit more debatable, but I still think the challenge on Fabinho in the build-up was clumsy.

Either way, articles like these really do prove just how poor Liverpool have been this season and if they don’t turn things around soon then their season could be wrote off by mid February.
