Top 10 signings at Liverpool under FSG – Opinion

|

It’s fair to say Liverpool have managed to pull off many world-class signings over the course of FSG’s 12-year reign as owners, many under the work of Sporting Director Michael Edwards.

Here are out top 10 Liverpool signings under FSG:

10. Fabinho (£40million)

The Brazilian joined the Reds in 2018 from AS Monaco for £40million and has been a constant in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield ever since. Whenever Fabinho doesn’t play, Liverpool looks so much more vulnerable.

9. Jordan Henderson (£16million)

Although it took Henderson a few years to really get going, under Jurgen Klopp he became a crucial part of the Liverpool machine. Captaining Liverpool to their first ever Premier League title as well as lifting every other trophy possible, including the iconic Champions League. Not bad business at all.

8. Roberto Firmino (£26million)

Firmino has been a vital part of Klopp’s side for over seven years now, making 347 appearances for the Reds and scoring 107 goals and creating 71 goals for his teammates. The Brazilian was also part of the iconic SFM trio upfront, consisting of Mohamed Salah, himself and Sadio Mane.

7. Luis Suarez (£22million)

Perhaps the best player on this list, signing this man for £22million was an insane piece of business from the Reds. Almost single-handedly carried the Reds to a Premier League title in 2014 but ultimately left Merseyside for Barcelona with just a League Cup to his name. The Uruguayan joined Barcelona for £75million, leaving FSG with £53million profit on their business.

6. Andy Roberston (£7.5million)

In terms of value for money, this is probably the best one on the list. Liverpool paid just £7.5million for Robertson when he joined from Hull in 2017 and within just a couple of seasons, the Scotsman had become the best left-back in the world and has made 240 appearances for Liverpool since then.

5. Sadio Mane (£35million)

Sadio Mane, what a player. In his six years on Merseyside, Mane became one of the best footballers in the world, winning every trophy possible and breaking multiple goalscoring records in the process. Unfortunately, Mane left for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022 for a fee of £45million but the Senegalese will forever be a Liverpool icon.

4. Alisson Becker (£56million)

When Alisson joined the Reds in 2018, eyebrows were raised as the Brazilian became the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the game. The keeper lived up to the hype, winning multiple golden glove awards and playing a huge role in all of Liverpool’s trophy triumphs since he arrived at the club. He also has the same number of goal contributions for Liverpool than £100million Jack Grealish has for Manchester City.

3. Philippe Coutinho (£8million)

Coutinho may not have contributed to the same number of trophies or success as the others on this list, but Liverpool made an astounding £132million profit on the Brazilian. Not just this, but on his day Coutinho was simply a magical footballer and without him we wouldn’t have been able to purchase the likes of Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk.

2. Virgil Van Dijk (£75million)

Despite the huge fee for the defender, Van Dijk completely transformed the Liverpool defense that had always been shaky before the Dutchman arrived at the club. Liverpool’s formidable defense was a key factor behind their Premier League and Champions League triumph and Virgil will hopefully continue to contribute to success under Jurgen Klopp for a few more years yet.

1. Mohamed Salah (£36million)

Mohamed Salah. Where do I begin? Labelled as a Chelsea reject when Liverpool signed him back in 2017, the Egyptian has gone on to break just about every goalscoring record since. Scoring a stunning 170 goals in 275 appearances in all competitions and also sitting 7th in Liverpool’s all-time top goal scorers despite only being at the club for five years.
