Victory at Ajax sees Liverpool into the last 16

|

Liverpool travelled to Amsterdam to face Ajax on Wednesday night, with the Reds pulling off an impressive 3-0 win which sees them progress into the knockout stages.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott punished Ajax who might feel like they deserved more from the game.

It was a game of two halves for Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s men struggling in the first half to get any sort of control of the game and were almost penalized on multiple occasions as Steven Berghuis and Dusan Tadic coming close to finding the back of the net.

A moment of magic allowed the Reds to go into the break 1-0 up, with a sublime outside of the foot pass from Jordan Henderson finding Mohamed Salah who dinked the ball over the keeper with ease.

The second half came with a much-improved performance from Klopp’s side, scoring two goals in the space of three minutes.

Darwin Nunez headed home from an Andy Robertson corner, with the Uruguayan now scoring in each of his last four appearances for Liverpool (Arsenal, Rangers, West Ham, Ajax).

Two minutes later Salah found youngster Harvey Elliott with a pinpoint pass, slicing Ajax’s defence wide open. The 19-year-old smashed the ball into the near top corner, making himself the first teenager to ever score in consecutive Champions League games for Liverpool.

The result sends Liverpool into the Round of 16 with a game to spare, as Liverpool host Napoli next Tuesday perhaps with the chance to rest some players.
