Liverpool’s emphatic 9-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon may have masked the cracks that have been forming in the team’s engine room.

It’s been a clear area of improvement for the Reds in recent seasons and the club’s failure to sign any midfield reinforcements this summer is worrying and frustrating.

That’s not to say the current midfield options aren’t good enough, they are, however, they are all prone to injuries which has left the starting XI looking vulnerable countless times.

Now, Virgil Van Dijk has weighed in on the midfield debate and claimed the club needs “a lot” of midfielders due to the Premier League’s hectic schedule.

“The amount of games we play, we need a lot of midfielders,” Virgil van Dijk said. “Midfielders are the engine of our team, they win so many balls for us. We need a lot of midfielders. You see the amount of games we play, we rotate a lot in midfield, apart from Fabinho.” [The Times].

The Dutch international is right, the Premier League season is long and tough and the engine room of the team is vital to making any charge for trophies.

The Reds should’ve acted long ago and leaving the search for a midfielder until the last minute seems like a foolish tactic from the Liverpool hierarchy.

There were reports around the club that a move had been made for Jude Bellingham this summer, nevertheless, that is far from a foregone conclusion with Chelsea sniffing around the Borussia Dortmund starlet. [Daily Star].

So that leaves the Reds with a potential frail midfield for the rest of this campaign, they’ve managed before but this season seems different.

All fans will be praying that a talent can be brought in before Thursday’s deadline; they don’t have to be a world-beater but the safety and security of an extra midfielder wouldn’t go amiss.
