Liverpool fell to defeat on Wednesday night in their fourth Champions League group game, losing out 2-0 to Atalanta at Anfield despite their 5-0 thrashing of the Italians in their away fixture.

On yesterday’s evening TalkSPORT radio show, presenter Adrian Durham spoke about his thought’s on the Liverpool loss, with the Reds’ poor performance the main body of the conversation…

I have to say that everything Durham says isn’t far from the truth sadly, the Reds looked a world away from their usual selves and never looked as though they were going to pose much of a threat to the Italian side, who didn’t exactly play perfect themselves.

Liverpool did play very poorly compared to what we have seen from them, with Durham even going as far to say they played better during the 7-2 loss to Aston Villa which I think is a fair reflection – the Reds managed two goals against the Villans during that game and even had both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in central defence, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, whereas the Reds had none of the above available during the Atalanta loss.

It was a strange performance from the club, with the aim to secure early qualification to the knockout stages now left for the Ajax game next week, with the Dutch side never an easy opponent to play against. Jurgen Klopp clearly felt that the team he selected were capable of beating Gasperini’s side, with Divock Origi not taking his opportunity with both hands a blowing a great chance of trying to save his career at the club.

Either way, Durham isn’t wrong in his valuation of the club’s performance during the game, with the attention now turning to tomorrow’s game against Brighton in the league.
