The Reds fell to defeat on Wednesday night in their fourth Champions League group game of the competition, losing out 2-0 to Atalanta at Anfield.

Liverpool and The Athletic journalist James Pearce shared his thoughts on one individual’s performance from that night and the ticking time-bomb on his career with the Reds – and that is Divock Origi…

Wednesday nights game to Atalanta lead to a great opportunity for one of the club’s out of favour strikers in Divock Origi, with the Belgium being handed a rare start to lead the Reds’ line against the Italian side in an attempt to secure early qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Should Liverpool keep Origi?

Yes, 100%

No, not good enough

No, not good enough

Sadly for Origi, he failed to make an impression on the game and never looked a threat to Atalanta’s defence. Jurgen Klopp has handed him a great chance to try and secure his place at the club with his future having been in doubt for some time now. Pearce is not wrong about him being an icon at the club – on many occasions the £14m rated Belgium had produced goals in some of the biggest games of the club’s history, with his starring role in the 2018/19 Champions League final win producing some of the biggest performances in his career.

I think that Origi’s time at the club is coming closer and closer to an end – with the striker failing to prove to Klopp why he should still play a role at the club on Wednesday, being substituted off in the 61st minute for Roberto Firmino. It would be a shame to see him leave in such a fashion but there is no doubt he has provided some great memories for this club to cherish.
