Ahead of tommorow’s game against Deportivo Saprissa we thought we’d give you a brief low down on the side from Costa Rica.

The club, formed in 1935, plays in the Costa Rica First Division – of which it has been in since 1949. Formed by a local shoe shop owner the name Saprissa was chosen as it was the surname of the person who could get the club kitted out.

The club is Known as the ‘los morados’ or ‘the purple ones’. due to the colour of the kit they play in. But it has a mascot known as ‘the purple monster’ – which relates to a time when a commentator mentioned how the sea of fans moved like a ‘purple monster’. The club mascot is now just that, a purple monster.

The club has officially won 36 titles of sorts in its history and is now the most supported football teams in Costa Rica.

The team is now managed by Hernan Medford, who played for Costa Rica in World Cup 2002, and now has an all Costa Rican nationality lineup.

The team play at their The Ricardo Saprissa Aymá stadium.

Players of note include Costa Rican international striker Ronald Gomez, who wears the number 11 shirt, is said to be very strong and very quick on the ball and Wilson Muñoz Brenes, who wears the number 7 shirt who is said to be quite a nippy little left winger.
