It is not often you get to hear the ins and outs of a players exit from a club – and what made them come to that final decision to move elsewhere.
That wasn’t the case for former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, who opened up about his exit from the club whilst featuring on the radio show TalkSPORT…

I found it very honourable from Murphy to open up in such depth about his departure after Rafa Benitez’s arrival at the club – especially given him being a Liverpool fan from a kid and dreaming of playing for the club much like us all.
His admittance of hating Rafa at the time shows the desire he had to want to stay with the club and it is interesting that he states he regrets his decision now and wishes he’d had more trust and belief in himself to stay and prove his ability to the manager at the time – as well as the fact he needed o play regular football for his own wellbeing, something that Rafa had stated he couldn’t promise the Englishman.

I find it staggering when hearing about the finer details of a players career – and Murphy’s candid story when explaining his departure from the club is one of the fine examples of how footballers are still human and that despite their aura and our clouded understanding of them as people rather than just as players, the more we start to understand and appreciate them and their careers.
Murphy certainly was a great player in my eyes, and luckily went on to forge a great career even after leaving Liverpool – but his honesty about the situation is certainly respectable.
