Former Red Kolo Toure appointed Wigan Athletic boss

Former Liverpool defender, Kolo Toure, has earned his first managerial role after being appointed as the new Wigan Athletic manager.

The Championship club sacked former manager Leam Richardson with the club currently in the relegation zone, sitting 22nd in the league table with just one win in their last eight games before the international break.

The 41-year-old said: “I am extremely proud to be named manager of Wigan Athletic, it’s a big club with hugely passionate fans. Together, we can continue to make the right steps forward.” [The Guardian]

Toure made 71 appearances for the Reds after joining the club back in 2013, playing a part in Liverpool’s title charge under Brendan Rodgers in the 2013-14 season.

The Ivorian left the Reds in 2016 and followed Brendan Rodgers to Celtic where he became one of the only players to win two league titles without a single defeat in that season, after going invincible with Arsenal all the way back in 2003.

Following his retirement in 2017, the defender became a coach under Rodgers at both Celtic and Leicester City and has now earned his first managerial role.

Toure’s first game in charge of the club will be on the 10th of December, as Wigan travel to London to face Millwall in a huge game with a win needed to take the club out of the relegation zone.
