There are growing frustrations among pockets of our fanbase regarding the lack of transfer activity, and it has substance behind it having not bought anyone of note last summer too.

But with this in mind, obvious financial constraints have limited us to be as active in the market as we may have wanted, having already seen deals for the likes of Timo Werner and Jamal Lewis fall through before we went and signed Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiakos.

I know that every team is in the same situation, which is a valid complaint to have. But how do you improve on 99 points in the league? Thiago Alcantara is not going to do that all by himself.

My question is if the situation surrounding Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract is affecting our moves for other players. If it is proving to be a barrier, then it needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Let’s remind ourselves, the Dutchman has just one year on his current deal. Thiago, also, has one year left on his deal with Bayern. Both could be available for free in six months, which provides an understandable stance from our club who are not willing to pay the £27m fee that the Bavarian club want for him.

With Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman interested in taking the £36m-rated midfielder to Spain, this also could be a factor in his possible hesitation.

Would you sacrifice Wijnaldum to bring in Thiago?

No

I can only imagine that we are getting a bit concerned about our wage structure, with our top five earners taking home a combined £840k-per-week, with contract extensions possibly in the making for those individuals, per Spotrac.

It is becoming glaring that we do not want to double Wijnaldum’s wage of £75k-per-week with him turning 30 next year. With the fact that we will have to sell before we buy, there is the possibility that Wijnaldum could be sacrificed for Thiago’s arrival at Anfield.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is spoilt for choice in midfield, with eight names to choose from that could potentially start in our traditional trio. We may not want to make it nine.

Taking all of this into consideration, if Wijnaldum leaves, it may speed up the process to bring the two-time Champions League winner to Liverpool. But with our transfer budget still unclear, we could wait until next year and sign a pre-contractual agreement to get the Spaniard for free.
