Liverpool returned to Premier League action on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion and much of the post-match chatter surrounded the use of VAR during the game.

The Reds found themselves with two goals disallowed due to VAR, as well as a penalty awarded to Brighton in the 93rd minute after VAR intervened once again and awarded the Seagulls the spot-kick.

Midfielder James Milner took to Twitter after the game to voice his opinions on the matter, with myself agreeing with what the 34-year-old had to say…

Milner makes a fair and valued point that it is plaguing the game we all love and is slowly sucking the enjoyment out of it with every shoelace and armpit hair that we see given as offside. The midfielder has been playing the game long enough to know that what is happening with the game at the moment in terms of VAR, having made his debut 17 years ago and playing in the Premier League ever since.

His little ‘clear and obvious’ jibe is straight on the money despite the intended humour behind it – with the main purpose of VAR being that it is there to help overturn and correct any clear and obvious decisions made by the on-field referee. Instead, we have seen VAR impose itself on the game with some of the most ridiculous moments and marginal offside offenses, as well as making a mockery of the integrity of the Premier League with each passing day.

Milner is right that a big discussion needs to be had at the top – and the sooner this is done the better as it is becoming more intolerable as the days go by to constantly see the most pathetic decisions made by the video assistant referee.
