The January transfer window is finally open and the recent rumours with players linked to the Reds will either start to materialise or simply fade into the abyss.
One of those recent rumours has caused a real stir online, with The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce even having to address the transfer link on Twitter surrounding the supposed move for Lille’s Dutch centre-back Sven Botman, who joined the French outfit back in July for just £7.2 million…

Pearce makes it pretty clear that to his knowledge, the Reds won’t be making a move for Botman this month and that the club has neither started talks with Lille nor are they considering a move for the 20-year-old.
He could be right in his assessment that either the player’s agent or individuals linked closely to him are trying to drive up his asking price given his impressive start to life for the French side and with his name doing the rounds for a big move in the near future, with Liverpool being used as one of those club’s to inflate interest.

It had been reported that the Reds were interested in a move for the youngster with Lille wanting as much as £45 million for his services, with Italian giants Inter Milan also interested in the defender.
It is evident to me that the club needs to reinforce their defensive options this winter given the current situation in defence with no senior centre-backs available due to injury, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the remainder of the season and Joel Matip sidelined for a number of weeks.
No matter the case, if the Reds don’t act fast and bring in another defensive option this month then they could leave themselves in a tough position going forward in their attempt to retain the Premier League title.
