Opinion: £36 million defender crucial to Reds success

|

Liverpool’s start to the season has been a big success given some of the setbacks they have already faced after just two months in.

The Reds have seen their squad plagued with injury – with their defensive options having been depleted after the season-long injury to Virgil van Dijk, as well as experiencing absences with Joel Matip and Fabinho in terms of defensive options and most recently that of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

One defender, however, has stood tall throughout and shown real leadership in his performances – and that is Joe Gomez.

I think the Englishman has been a revelation this season so far, having dealt with the absence of his usual central defensive partner van Dijk with ease and climatising well to the defensive partners he has featured with since.

Fabinho, Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams, and Joel Matip have all featured alongside the 23-year-old, showing how crucial the £36 million rated defender has been to Jurgen Klopp this season – with him having played every game in both the Premier League and Champions League since van Dijk’s injury.

His statistics during this time have impressed as well – winning on average 3 aerial duels per game in the Premier League, and 5 aerial duels per game in the Champions League. Gomez’s Champions League performances have shown real quality, with an average of 1.3 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, and 6 clearances per game.

I believe Gomez has been a shining light during this dark and difficult period for the club and has shown just how important he will be for Klopp’s side this season and those in the future.

With the defender only producing two performances below a 7/10 WhoScored match rating in his last 6 games, Gomez has proven to be a player Klopp can rely on in a crisis.
