This week marked a sad day in the calendar of Liverpool players, fans, and former reds all over the world – with the club spending their final day at the legendary Melwood training ground.

The move comes in the light of the clubs new £50 million training facility in Kirkby ready for occupation, with the site being named the AXA Training Centre after the naming rights were given to the long time training kit sponsors.

It makes sense for Jurgen Klopp to be in charge of the club, taking them into this new era – with the new facility boasting some fantastic aspects to help drive the club further into the history books. The centre boasts three full-size pitches, goalkeeping and warm-up areas, two gyms, a sports hall, pool and hydrotherapy facilities – as well as specialist rehabilitation suites (LiverpoolECHO).

As a Liverpool fan, it will be strange no longer seeing the Melwood facility featuring across the Liverpool socials every day, as will the thought of being a youngster and trying to get a glimpse over the big concrete walls of your favourite Liverpool stars like all generations of Reds have done.

One former Reds legend took to Twitter to voice his feeling’s on the clubs last day at the training facility – with Jamie Carragher sharing some great photos of the ground throughout the years…

Despite the sadness surrounding the move and that grand old feeling of nostalgia, it is an exciting time for Liverpool fans all over the world – and I for sure am looking forward to what this new era can bring to the club, especially with Klopp at the helm and the squad we currently get to enjoy right now.

The club has come on leaps and bounds over recent years and I for one, have enjoyed watching us become one of the top European clubs again, especially after clinching our first league title for 30 years with our first Premier League title last season. I think this new training ground speaks more for the work that Klopp has done these past 5 years than just the trophies – he has revolutionised this club as much as any manager before him, finally taking us to where we deserve to be.

Either way, the Melwood facility brought some great memories and some world-class players through its doors, and hopefully, the AXA Training Centre will be exactly the same for the next generation of young Liverpool fans.
