The blow from the injury back in October to key man Virgil van Dijk was softened slightly by the fact that the club still had Joe Gomez during a great period of form with the 23-year-old improving every game.

Sadly for the Liverpool faithful, this was short-lived as the Englishman suffered his own long-term knee injury whilst on international duty, leading to surgery and more than a seventh month lay off on the sidelines.

It has been a long time without our first-choice centre-back pairing, with Van Dijk offering numerous videos and updates on his progress whilst we haven’t seen loads from the Gomez camp in regards to his recovery until now. Yesterday saw Gomez give fans an update on Instagram, as cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter, with a video of his recovery and work in the gym which has excited the Reds faithful, as well as him working with a ball and out on the training pitches…

I was very happy to see the video especially given how well he is looking after just four months of recovery from a clearly very bad knee injury. There is hope that Van Dijk may return before the end of the season but I can’t see Gomez making as much of a remarkable comeback like that.

Transfermarkt have a return date for Gomez down as the 30th June and although this is unlikely to be an official date or target set by the club, the information has to have come from somewhere so I’d imagine it’ll be around that make where we see Gomez make his return to the squad.

Despite him being almost a shoo-in for the Euro’s squad before his injury, I don’t think he will be fit enough in time to get a run of games and make a push for the England squad sadly, but that just means he will have more time to recover before next season for us.
