Last night marked the 67th BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, with Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton announced as the winner after equalling Michael Schumacher’s record for the most Championships this season with 7, as well as breaking the German’s record for the most wins and pole positions this year – a worthy winner of the award.

Sadly for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, he fell just short of the accolade, finishing second behind Hamilton in the voting after his impressive year leading Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League title and their first league title for 30 years.

It was a fine year of football both on and off the pitch for the 30-year-old, who also won the Football Writers’ Player of the Year and the Liverpool Player of the Year awards.

Henderson’s work off the pitch didn’t go unnoticed, with the Liverpool captain spearheading the Players Together campaign amid the current global climate to raise money for a group of charities named NHS Charities Together – with the midfielder helping the cause to raise more than £102 million for the NHS Charities Together fund.

The midfielder has shown himself to be a real leader both on and off the pitch and deserved to be in the running for the award last night.

I think Henderson was very unlucky to miss out on the trophy as he has shown this past year that his efforts both in games for Liverpool and for the country and the local community. Our title win alone should have been enough for him to win in my opinion with our first-ever Premier League title proving to be one of the most impressive sporting achievements for some time now.
