Following his injury on England duty on Sunday, captain Jordan Henderson has been released from international duty and has returned to the club for further assessment.

It was reported on Sunday after the game that Henderson had been substituted off during half time after muscle tightness during England’s 2-0 defeat to Belgium.

The fact that Henderson has been released and has returned to the Kirkby training facility could mean one of two things – either the injury is worse than originally feared and the captain will need specialist treatment with the club, or Henderson has performed a bit of smoke and mirrors act to try and get back to the club for light rehabilitation before the injury gets any worse whilst with the England team.

Although neither aspect has been confirmed nor denied – I wouldn’t want to speculate on the reason why and just assume it is to get the best treatment possible to help with the injury, with him then likely being unavailable for the countries remaining Nations League game against Iceland.

Henderson’s importance has never been as key as it is now with the Reds’ current injury situation with seven of the first-team currently sidelined – and if the captain were to be sidelined too, it could be very damaging for the club over this busy period of games starting against Leicester on Sunday.

The captain has an incredibly positive impact on this Liverpool side, with the club winning 69% of their games when he is in the starting XI compared to just 56% when he is absent – showing his leadership and ability to drive the team forward such an invaluable asset.

Let’s hope that the knock isn’t as bad as it could be and that hopefully, Henderson will start against the Foxes come the weekend.
