Thursday saw Gareth Southgate announce his England squad for the countries upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania, and Poland – with him leaving out one Liverpool player from the squad in particular.
Southgate opted to leave out 22-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold with the youngster now staying with the club to continue training under Jurgen Klopp during the international break before the Reds return to Premier League action with a trip to Arsenal at the start of April.
The Reds manager, Klopp, was quick to stick up for Trent in light of the decision with many fans confused as to why Trent had been left out. The Athletic’s James Pearce stated that Klopp regards Trent as one of the club’s standout performers since the turn of the year with him showing leadership during a difficult period of injuries and changing roles between players in the squad, as cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter…

It is great to see Klopp defending his players in such a why and it leads to believe that Tren may have taken the news that he wasn’t in the squad very well – it is possible that it could have had an effect on him given how invested he is in the game. We have seen the passion Trent has and he is a born winner so this likely would have been a huge hit.
As Klopp says, he has been one of our best performers since the turn of the year after a rocky first half of the season not just for himself but the whole squad – however, we have seen him turn that form around and one thing I have noticed is his defensive side of his game starting to improve which is mightily impressive.

Hopefully, Trent will make the squad for the Euros in the summer as I think we would be at a massive disadvantage without him.
